ABOUT
Gary Thomas is an artist and potter. His ceramic work naturally leans towards the Leach movement more often than not with additions of bright primary colours. The result is both functional and beautiful with Japanese undertones. Working from a studio at his home, Gary creates decorative bowl and vase shapes formed on the wheel inspired by some of the most basic traditions in studio pottery.
Trained and influenced by the father & son partnership Harold and Derek Thornton: both members of the Manchester Red Rose Guild of Design Craftsmen.
As one can see from both his decorative and functional ceramics his influences are from potters such as Lucie Rie and Bernard Leach. He studied at Bath Academy of Art and Leeds Polytechnic and holds a 1st class BA (Hons) Degree. He is at present a member of the NPA Northern Potters Association and exhibits work in and around the North West and Yorkshire.
Gary started his career as a young potter in 1970 and worked as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator throughout the 1970's. He has passed on his range of skills in art, design, printmaking and technology at a number of schools and colleges throughout the North in the 1980's.
"A continual development of shape, form, balance, surface texture and colour is the inspiration to produce pottery showing both subtlety and sensitivity"
